Chistopher N.H. Jenkins Award
Purpose: The purpose of the Christopher N.H. Jenkins Cancer Control Award is an annual, endowed award to recognize an individual who has made significant accomplishments in community-oriented cancer prevention and control efforts targeting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The Award will be presented annually at a national meeting of the Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness, Research and Training.
Qualifications of Award Recipient: The award recipient will be an individual who has made significant accomplishments in community-oriented cancer prevention and control efforts targeting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, primarily in the arenas where Chris worked. These arenas include tobacco control, hepatitis B vaccinations, breast and cervical cancer screening, nutrition, and cancer outreach and education research affecting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
Selection of Recipient : The recipient will be selected by a committee initially chaired by Moon S. Chen, Jr., Ph.D., M.P.H., the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness Research & Training. In the event the AANCART PI cannot serve, the Selection Committee will choose a chair from within itself. Charter members of this committee include Ms. Tran Khanh Tuyet or Ms. Me Linh Jenkins or another member of Chris Jenkins' family; Ms. Thoa Nguyen, Vietnamese Community Health Promotion Project; AANCART Regional PIs Stephen J. McPhee, M.D., Vicky Taylor, M.D., M.P.H., Regional Ho, M.D., Kurt Snipes, PhD, Marjorie Kagawa-Singer, Ph.D, MN, RN, or their designees; Art Chen, M.D., Alameda Alliance for Health; Rod Lew, M.P.H., Asian Pacific Partner Empowerment and Leadership (APPEAL); and Ms. Emily Leang, UCSF Division of General Internal Medicine Management Service Officer.
The purpose of this committee is to select a recipient annually from any source based upon a call for nominees.
Recipient's Responsibilities : Over the 12-month period immediately after receiving the Award, the recipient will be responsible for:
providing technical assistance or lecturing on cancer prevention and control in the U.S.;
presenting the Christopher N.H. Jenkins Cancer Control Lecture at a date and place to be determined; and
preparing recommendations for enhancing cancer prevention and control efforts targeting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
Award: The recipient will receive a personalized plaque and a $1,000 cash award. The recipient's name will be added to a plaque maintained at the AANCART national office. In addition, the recipient will be reimbursed for travel and lodging expenses related to the recipient's providing technical assistance or lectures at designated events.
